Islamabad, July 13, 2017 (dpa/NAN)The Pakistani National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Thursday warned urban dwellers to beware of flooding and landslides following heavy monsoon rains that have left around a dozen people dead in the last 24 hours.
“The authority put rescue and relief agencies on alert by warning that evacuations might be necessary, amid fears of flooding in the mountainous north of the country,’’ NDMA spokesman Brig. Mukhtiar Ahmed said.
Another official, Mohamed Naveed said that heavy monsoon rains have been responsible for about a dozen deaths since on Wednesday afternoon, mostly due to electrocutions, drowning and falling roofs.
“The toll might go up as more deaths were being reported from the central province of Punjab, where rainwater inundated low-lying areas in the cities,’’ he said.
The metrological department in the capital, Islamabad, predicted more rains during the next 24 hours, advising people to take precautions.
Flash floods typically cause hundreds of deaths in Pakistan during monsoon season, which starts from July and lasts till the end of August. (dpa/NAN)
