Abuja, June 29, 2017 (NAN) Zimbabwean golfer Visitor Mpwanya on Thursday took an early lead in round one of the West Africa Golf Tour (WAGT) B & E Match Play in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the pro tournament teed off on Thursday at the IBB Golf and Country Club and is expected to end on Sunday.

No less than 40 players from seven countries, namely Zimbabwe, Gabon, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Spain took part in the first round of the four-day stroke play tournament.

Mpwanya played steady golf, shooting level par on each nine for a score of 72 and a 2-shot lead.

It was not really a bad score, on a day when scoring was difficult due to the recent heavy rains which made the course play at full length.

Birdies were also scarce with no player making more than 3 birdies in their round.

Cameroonian Pristhy Nji and Nigerian Morgan Atako both shot 74 to be tied in second place at the tournament which continues on Friday.

The event being sponsored by iCubefarm.com from Equatorial Guinea and Imanue Easykean Ltd. has a prize fund of 50,000 dollars with the winner expected to pocket 8,000 dollars.
