NIPOGA 2017: Ikorodu thrash Oko to clinch female Volleyball gold

Nasarawa (Nasarawa State), May 4, 2017 (NAN) Ikorodu Polytechnic on Thursday thrashed Oko Polytechnic, in three straight sets, to clinch gold in the female Volleyball event at the ongoing Nigeria Polytechnics Games (NIPOGA) in Nasarawa.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 19th edition of the games, which kicked off at the Nasarawa Federal Polytechnic on April 29 is expected to end on May 6.
Ikorodu came into the finals having emerged winners of Group A which comprised of Esa-Oke, Zaria and Imo and Auchi Polytechnics.
The Group A winners were ruthless as they won all three of their group games, walking over Esa-Oke before thrashing Zaria 3-1 and Auchi Poly 3-0 respectively.
While Zaria finished as runners up after beating Auchi 3-1 and walking over Esa-Oke.
Their opponents, Oko Poly also finished as Group B winners which comprised of Sokoto and Barkin Ladi respectively.
Oko whipped Sokoto and Barkin Ladi 3-1 and 3-0 respectively to top the group, while Barkin Ladi settled for the runners up position after beating Sokoto in three straight sets.
It was a straight forward victory for both sides as they all recorded convincing victories against their opponents in the semifinals.
Ikorodu thrashed Barkin Ladi in three straight sets, while Oko were also clinical as they brushed aside Zaria 3-0.
The final was a nail-biting encounter as both sides looked to settle early nerves and take control of the game.
The duo of Ejiofor Nancy, the team’s setter and Amara Uchechukwu, the star player of the team combined well early in the first to keep their opponents on the back foot.
But their opponents were having none of it as they responded with counter-attacks of their own to take all three-sets 25-12, 25-13, 25-11 at the end of a pulsating encounter.
Ikorodu were crowned champions, while Oko settled for the silver medal.
NAN also reports that the third place match saw Barkin Ladi beat Zaria 3-0 to take home the bronze medal.
The games which began on April 29 is expected to end with the closing ceremony on Saturday. (NAN)
