Lagos, April 4, 2017 (NAN) The International Labour Organisation (ILO) says the Sustainable Development Goals will not become a reality until they are powered by the decisive actions of governments and private companies.
The organisation, in its 2017 first quarter report released on Tuesday, which was made available to newsmen in Lagos, said it was time for each countries of the world to reconsider their economic practices and lifestyles.
“We need a different kind of growth – one which does not create social divides and which respects the planetary boundaries.
“Only real change can make the national economy of every country more sustainable and resilient,’’ the report said.
It further said that the current economic practices were destroying the planet, which according to it, is the only true resource on which people’s lives depend.
“ We have already exceeded several planetary boundaries. Climate change is the most obvious sign that things are getting out of hand,’’ it said.
The ILO report also said that the concept of sustainability was a powerful tool which took into consideration the economic, social and environmental dimensions.
It said economies or economic growth would have to be socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable.
The report urged countries to emulate South Africa that was currently implementing programmes to promote energy efficiency, green transport, sustainable housing and climate resilient agriculture. (NAN)
