Pankshin (Plateau), March 8, 2017 (NAN) Mrs Rufina Gurumyen, the Plateau Commissioner of Women Affairs, has
challenged women step up and improve their productive worth in the society.

Gurumyen said this at the celebration of the International Women’s Day organised by the association of Women in Colleges of Education (WICE), North Central Zone.

She described women are mentors, role models, icon of peace and symbols of integrity in the society.

According to her, the meeting of WICE is timely and serves as a mentoring network for young girls.

“The theme of the celebration which is ‘Be Bold for Change’ implies that the woman should record greater milestones in her development, have a bold face to thrive economically even in the midst of recession.

“We should learn from the women of old who left indelible marks by the great potential they deposited as a legacy in the society.”

Gurumyen said the celebration of the Women’s Day in Pankshin Local Government was a gesture by the government to engage rural women in all its activities and improve their lives.

In her speech, Dr Zipporah Dururyil, the National President of WICE, said that the organisation was intensifying its network in mentoring school girls.

She said it was imperative for mothers to prepare girls for the future.

“We had 300 girls at our last meeting who made commitments to live a moral, goal-oriented and empowered lives.”

Dr Amos Cirfat, the Provost, Federal College of Education, Pankshin, in her remarks, said women should not allow anyone to undermine their capacity, wisdom and wealth of knowledge.

He expressed concern that some women accepted the status as second class citizens in the society.

Cirfat urged women to brace up for change and be ready to create a better and gender inclusive working environment for all and sundry.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that eight personalities received Awards of Excellence, including Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, the former Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), and Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, the Minister of Water Resources in the last administration. (NAN)
