Abeokuta, March 2, 2017 (NAN) The Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) on Thursday presented cheques to the winners of the 2016 edition of the GTB/Ogun State Principal’s Cup.

The sponsors also used the programme to kick off the 2017 edition of the competition by inviting all the private and public schools in the state to register.

Tolulope Onipede, Team Leader, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) unit of GTB, said the programme was a platform for students to help themselves and urged them to take advantage of it.

She said that the programme was a massive investment committed to grassroots football development.

“Even though we are starting with the secondary schools, it’s not limited to that; we are poised to go higher than that this.

“Some of the talents discovered are already on the team lists both at the state and national levels,’’ Onipede added.

Modupe Mujota, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, thanked GTB for sustaining the competition for four years in the state.

She also commended the students for conducting themselves in a good manner over the years, saying “none of them has ever been arrested for unruly behavior’’.

The commissioner urged them to “play by the rules’’.

She said that there was the need for participating schools to make medical teams available at the competition at all times.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Sports, Afolabi Afuape, said the state government alone could not develop sports alone, hence the need for corporate organisations to come in.

He promised that the state would put into judicious use all resources given to it and tasked the coordinators in each school to keep the “flag flying’’.

NAN reports that the winners, Muslim High School, Isolu (Girls) and Alamuwa Grammar School, Ado-Odo (Boys) were awarded N1 million each.
