Load bearer in court over alleged shop-breaking

Lagos, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) A 24-year-old load bearer, Muhammed Umar, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly burgling a shop and stealing N80,000 property, belonging to Don Cumax Ventures.

The accused who is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and theft, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Philip Osijiale, told the court that the defendant and others at large, on Dec. 13, 2016 at about 1:30 a.m. at Apongbon, Lagos burgled the shop.

Osijiale said the defendant and his accomplice stole N80, 000 worth of wares belonging to Don Cumax Ventures.

He said the security guard on duty caught one of the culprits, but the others attacked the guard with machetes and freed the suspect.

He said the guard raised an alarm, which led to the arrest of Umar, while the rest escaped.

“The defendant was caught by the mob and beaten to a pulp before the arrival of the police,” he said.

He said the offences contravened
Sections 285, 305 (b) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing; Section 305 (b) provides seven years for breaking and entry, while Section 409 stipulates two years for conspiracy.

The Magistrate, Mr Omolaja Kazeem, admitted the defendant to N20, 000 bail with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Feb. 27 for mention. (NAN)
