Court slams N500,000 bail on security guard over alleged N150,000 phone theft

Lagos, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) A security guard, Ibrahim Lamidi, who allegedly stole mobile phones valued at N150,000, was on Wednesday released on bail in the sum of N500, 000, a Lagos court has ruled.

A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court on the island which gave the ruling, also granted the accused two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mr Omolaja Kazeem, said one of the sureties must be his family member, while the other surety should be a civil servant.

Lamidi, who is facing a charge of stealing, pleaded innocence of the offence.

The prosecutor, Insp. Philip Osijiale told the court that the accused had on July 15, 2016 at about 5.30 p.m. at Tinubu Square, Lagos Island, stolen customer’s phones.

He said the accused, a newly-employed security guard, bolted with phones belonging to customers, who came to charge their phones at a charging centre at the square.

He added that the accused was only four days on the job when he absconded with an Infinix phone, a Blackberry Bold 6 and a Java phone all valued at N150,000.

“Lamidi was employed as a security guard at Tinubu Square Water Fountain and on his fourth day on the job he bolted with phones belonging to customers, who came to charge their phones.

“He was later nabbed on Jan. 16 at a party in Lawanson, Lagos,” Osijiale told the court.

The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 which proscribes three years imprisonment for offenders.

Further hearing in the case has been fixed for Feb. 27. (NAN)
