Murder
Phnom Penh, Feb. 16, 2017 (dpa/NAN) A 44-year-old British man, wanted in connection with a murder in Thailand, is now in Cambodian police custody, local authorities confirmed on Thursday.
Toby Nelhams is wanted by Thai police for questioning in the January murder of British businessman Tony Kenway, 39, who was killed in Pattaya, Thailand, over an alleged business dispute.
Nelhams, who has not lived in Thailand since 2015, is a former business associate of Kenway, Thai police told dpa.
They allege he is the mastermind behind Kenway’s murder.
Cambodian national police spokesman Kirth Chanarith confirmed that Nelhams was in custody but declined to comment further.
Local media had reported that Nelhams has been in custody for “several days” saying the police were tipped off by a fellow Briton who had been arrested for overstaying his visa.
Cambodia and Thailand do not have an extradition agreement; however a Thai police spokesman said that the police would ask for Nelhams to be handed over.
Kenway was shot January 24 at point-blank range in broad daylight.
Police have identified a South African man named Abel Caldeira Bonita as the gunman and British national Miles Dickens Turner as an accomplice.
Both suspects remain at large.
Kenway allegedly ran an online football gambling website and had a conflict with a group of influential figures in Pattaya, a police source told the Bangkok Post.
Pattaya, 80 kilometres south-east of Bangkok, is a popular resort town among expatriates.
Its nickname, “Sin City,” reflects its reputation as a centre of prostitution and organised crime. (dpa/NAN)
