Court slams N100,000 bail on commercial driver for allegedly raping neighbour’s daughter

Lagos, Feb. 3, 2017 (NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday admitted a 20-year-old driver, Lekan Akinyemi, to bail in the sum of N100, 000 for allegedly raping his co-tenant’s 14- year-old daughter.
Akinyemi, who resides at Alhaji Oladipupo Street Oko-oba, Agege, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a charge of rape.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Davies Abegunde, who gave the ruling, ordered the accused to produce two sureties in like sum.
Abegunde said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 20 at his residence.
Donny said the accused forcefully had carnal knowledge of the minor.
The prosecutor added that the complainant said the accused called her at about 10 p.m. to help him buy recharge cards.
Donny said the accused told the girl to follow him inside his room to collect the money for the recharge cards.
He said on entering the room, the accused locked the door and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.
Donny said the girl cried for help, but nobody was at home, and the accused later used a cloth to cover her mouth and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
Donny said the girl narrated everything that happened to her mother immediately she came back from work.
“The minor said that her mother quickly took her to a nearby hospital, where she was given medication to flush her system.
“The complainant said that the case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested and taken to the police station for further questioning,” he said.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment upon conviction for rape.
The case was adjourned till Feb. 27 for mention. (NAN)
