35-year-old printer pleads guilty to phone theft, remanded in prison

Lagos, Aug. 21, 2017 (NAN) A 35-year-old printer, Haruna Aregbesola, who admitted the charge of stealing a phone valued at N40,000, is to cool his heels in custody pending judgment, an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court ruled on Monday in Lagos.

The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, who gave the order, said the accused, who resides at Agege, a Lagos suburb, should be kept in Kirikiri Prisons.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence sometime in  July at Oko-Oba, Agege.

Okuoimose said the accused stole a Tecno C7 tablet valued at N40,000, property of the complainant, Mr Yinka Falaye.

“The accused visited the complainant and requested for the use of his phone to call somebody.

“The complainant gave him the phone and the accused disappeared with the phone.

“When the accused was later seen, he could not produce the phone and the complainant decided to report the case to the police,’’ he told the court.

In his plea for mercy, the accused the crime he committed to the handiwork of the devil.

“Please, have mercy on me, it is the devil’s work, I will never do it again.’’

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (Revised)

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes three years jail term for offenders.

The magistrate has fixed Aug. 29 for sentence. (NAN)
