Okafor pledged the readiness of the command to ensure that criminals have no space to operate in any part of the state during the period.
To this effect, he said that men and officers of the command had been mobilised to provide 24-hour security surveillance in all parts of the state.
He added that all the area commands and divisions had also been directed to stay on top of security situation in their jurisdictions.
“With less than three weeks to Christmas, the police authority has put in place all necessary plans to check the activities of criminals and other hoodlums.
“As has been the tradition of the police, no effort will be spared in ensuring that every nook and cranny of the state is policed and made safe before and during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“The Commissioner of Police (CP), Mrs Peace Ibekwe-Abdella, has constantly warned that there will be no space for criminals and other hoodlums to operate in the state and she has religiously kept faith.
“The police command wants to use this opportunity to warn those planning to cause security breaches or engage in any format of criminal activities to have a rethink about their actions as there will be no safe haven for criminals,” he warned.
He reiterated the commitment of the command to enforce the ban on the use of fireworks, stressing that anyone caught indulging in the act would be arrested and prosecuted in the law court.
He advised parents and guidance to monitor the movements of their children and wards and to ensure that they were not cajoled into engaging in criminal activities by their peer groups.
“They should monitor the type of friends that visit their children and wards as well as check when these children go out and the time they come back,” he said.
The police spokesman reminded the public that security issue was a concern of everyone.
He urged the public to report any suspected criminal activity in their area to security operatives for prompt response.
“With the cooperation of the public through their timely volunteering of credible information, the state will be kept safe from the menace of men of the underworld,” he said.
He advised the people to maintain a high level of security consciousness, noting that criminal elements were constantly devising new strategies to outwit their victims.
Okafor, however, said that the police could be reached via the following distress call numbers: 08037844377 and 07064515001. (NAN)
