Washington, April 7, 2017 (dpa/NAN) Chinese President Xi Jinping said during his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida that he is ready to push forward U.S.-China relations from a new starting point, Chinese state media reported on Friday.
“There are 1,000 reasons to make the China-U.S. relationship work, and no reason to break it,” Xi said.
Xi arrived on Thursday in Palm Beach, Florida, for a two-day summit with Trump.
The meeting is expected to be dominated by discussions about trade, North Korea’s nuclear threat and the recent U.S. airstrike on a Syrian government base.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, had dinner with Trump and first lady Melania Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort.
Trump also said the two men had “developed a friendship.”
“I think, long-term, we are going to have a very, very great relationship, and I look very much forward to it,” Trump said.
Xi said the normalisation of U.S.-China relations 45 years ago has brought “enormous and pragmatic benefits,” Xinhua reported.
He said it will take political resolve from the leaders of the two countries to enhance the relations in the next 45 years.
Trump accepted Xi’s invitation to visit China this year. (dpa/NAN)
