Training
Abuja, Jan. 19, 2018 (NAN) Nigerian wrestlers have intensified their training at the Port Harcourt and Yenagoa camps in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, a Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) official said on Friday.
Secretary-General of NWF, Ahmed Abdullahi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the male wrestlers have been camping in Port Harcourt while their female counterparts are in Yenagoa.
NAN reports that the camping’s first phase began on Jan. 5 and will end on Feb. 12, while the second phase will commence immediately after the end of the first phase.
“Thirty-two wrestlers were invited to camp for both the Commonwealth Games and the African Wrestling Championship slated for Port Harcourt from Feb. 7 to Feb. 11.
“The wrestlers have shown great sense of responsibility and discipline. So, they are well prepared and targeting nothing but a podium appearance.
“The first phase will end next month and the second phase will commence immediately after the trials as we expect changes in times and performances,’’ Abdullahi said.
He said facilities at the camps were of standard, and the federation expected good performances from the wrestlers.
The XXI Commonwealth Games is scheduled to hold at Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia from April 4 to April 15.(NAN)
