Abuja, June 13, 2018 (NAN) The Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF) on Wednesday charged government at all levels and parents to eliminate all forms of abuse against children.
The Executive Director of WOTCLEF, Mrs Imabong Ladipo-Sanusi gave the charge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to commemorate World Against Child Labour Day in Abuja.
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to commemorate the day on June 12 annually to focus on issues of child labour, the actions and efforts needed to eliminate the menace.
Ladipo-Sanusi explained that child labour was overwhelmingly stealing the future and perpetually putting children in the cycle of poverty.
According to her, the laws are there to protect and promote the rights of the children yet rights of children are being violated.
She said that her organisation condemned the fact that even though “people say no to child abuse, they still turn a blind eye on activities that abuse or violate the rights of children.
“We call on the government at all levels, parents, traditional and religious leaders to ensure that children exploitation is stopped.
“Why will a five year and10 year old sibling sisters live and work in the restaurant at this modern age.
“Let the Child Right Act be implemented at all levels where children will receive free and compulsory education rather than do hazardous and domestic jobs where they are being exploited sexually and otherwise.
“We should all remember like Nelson Mandela said “you can tell a society by the way they treat the children,” she said.
The director urged everyone to take up the responsibility of eliminating all forms of abuse against children in the country. (NAN)
