Kano May 8, 2018 (NAN) Kano State branch of Red Cross Society of Nigeria on Tuesday launched Life Saving Blood Donors Club to mark World Red Cross Day in Kano.

Executive Secretary of the Kano branch of the society Malam Musa Abdullahi, said during the launch that
the club, with 120 members, was to raise awareness about blood donation in hospitals.

He explained that the society in Kano realised that there was need for blood at the Emergency and Maternity units of many health facilities.

According to him, the club is to work toward collecting blood from 500 volunteers.

He added that the ongoing strike by JOHESU had affected the plan “because storage facilities are all locked up.”

He said that the society would, however, create data base of volunteers and would henceforth be supplying blood donation to hospitals on request.

Commenting on the World Red Cross Day, Abdullahi said May 8 was marked globally to celebrate the birthday of the founder of Red Cross Society, Mr Henry Dunant, a Swiss nationale.

He said it was an international day dedicated to alleviating human sufferings, upholding human dignity, protecting lives, and preventing emergencies and natural disasters such as flood, epidemics and earthquakes.

The fundamental principles recognised during World Red Cross Day are impartiality, humanity, independence, neutrality, voluntary, universality, and unity. All components of Red Cross organisations uphold and respect these principles.

World Red Cross Day is meant to inspire, facilitate and also promote humanitarian activities that are carried out by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and National Societies which are its members.  (NAN)
