Women Centre to train 140 female artisans

Abuja, April 9, 2018 (NAN) The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) on Monday commenced three weeks training for 140 female artisans between the ages of 18 and 35.

The Director-General of NCWD, Mrs Mary Ekpere-Eta disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the residential capacity building for female artisans in Abuja.

She said the artisans, who were drawn across the country, would be trained in plumbing and piping, generating set repairs and maintenance, air conditioning, refrigeration as well as tiling and masonry.

“The NCWD has designed this robust project to move women and young girls from traditional skills to meet the growing demands and provide skilled workforce for the Nigerian construction industries.

“The project is aim at equipping the beneficiaries to break the stereotype around the ability of females to do well in non-traditional trades.

“The aim also is to empower them to install and maintain as well as to become agents of change in their respective communities,” she said.

Ekpere-Eta said that the programme was structured to give the beneficiary a voice and confidence to cope in a competitive environment.

She added that the training had been spiced with lessons on self-esteem, gender awareness, personal grooming and hygiene.

“It is expected that at the end of the training, participants will achieved level one certification, as well as acquiring a level three trade test certification in the identification of the skill.

“Arrangement has also been concluded to empower the participants with start-up packs and take off grants, which will be given to them at the end of the exercise,’’ he added. (NAN)
