Abuja, March 28, 2017 (NAN) A 35-year-old woman, Hope Okeke, was on Tuesday arraigned in a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for alleged joint act and extortion.
The defendant who resides at Gwagwa Abuja, however, denied committing the offences.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that one Norah Anokwu of Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on March 16.
Dalhatu said that the complainant alleged that on same date, she boarded a taxi from Area 1 to Wuse Zone3.
The complainant alleged that on getting there, the driver diverted to another destination.
The complainant also alleged that the defendant formed common intention with two others now at large, to use iron rod to beat her, collected her hand bag containing a BlackBerry cell phone, 5 pieces of shirts and N3, 950 cash, Dalhatu said.
The prosecutor also said that during police investigation, a Nokia cell phone was recovered from the defendant.
Dalhatu said that the offences contravened Sections 79 and 292 of the Penal Code.
The counsel to the defendant, Cynthia Nnamdi, applied for her bail, and assured the court that the defendant would not jump bail.
The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted her bail in the sum of N50, 000 and one surety in like sum
Sadiq said that the surety must be a grade level seven officer and above in the Federal Civil Service, and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He adjourned the case till May 8, for further hearing. (NAN)
