Welder in court over alleged failure to construct burglar-proof

Lagos, June 4, 2018 (NAN) A 50-year-old welder, Rasaki Adekoya, who allegedly defrauded one  Mr Akinola Abayomi of N31,000 on the pretext of constructing a burglar-proof for him, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Adekoya, who resides at No. 15, Babajide Otutu St., Off Ijesha Bus Stop, Ayobo, Lagos, is being tried for stealing and obtaining under false pretences.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court  that the accused committed the offences sometime in March at Ayobo.

Samuel said that the accused collected the money from  Abayomi,  but failed to do the job.

According to him, the accused converted the money to his  personal use.

“Adekoya started avoiding the complainant after collecting the money.

“When Abayomi did not get any feedback from the accused, he called him on phone, but he refused to pick his calls.

” When the accused eventually picked the calls, he started making excuses for his inability to construct the burglar-proof.

“Abayomi reported the case to the police, and the accused was  arrested,’’ he said.

He noted that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years’ jail term for stealing while Section 314 prescribes 15 years’ imprisonment  for obtaining by false pretences.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.I. Abina, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Abina adjourned the case until June 20 for mention. (NAN)
