Weightlifting Trials: African junior gold medalist wins 48kg category

Abuja, Dec. 7, 2017 (NAN) Monica Uweh, a gold medalist at the last African Junior/Youths Weightlifting Championships in Uganda, on Thursday won the female 48kg snatch category at the ongoing National Weightlifting Trials in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-day National Weightlifting Trials which opened at the Abuja National Stadium on Thursday will end on Friday.

Uweh had won the three gold medals at stake in the 48kg category at the African Junior/Youths Weightlifting Championships in Uganda some months back.

Nkem Nwokolo came second followed by Destiny Rich in the third position.

In the female 53kg category, Chika Amalaha came first while Rofitat Lawal and Fatima Yakubu came second and third respectively.

The female 58kg event has Ruth Ayodele in first position while Chinerey Fedelis and Bose Sunday came second and third.

Earlier, Umar Lambu, the Secretary-General of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), had promised Nigerians a good outing by Nigeria at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Lambu told NAN on the sidelines of the National Open Trials that the event would help the federation to select the best athletes.

He said athletes that would be selected at the trials would represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games and other international and national championships.

Lambu said the federation was committed to helping the country win many medals at the Commonwealth Games.

“For the Commonwealth Games, we are expecting podium performance. We have done it before and this time we will do more.’’

He added that the trials would help the NWF to have a database of the best athletes “so that we can use them for both international and national championships.

The trials continues on Friday with the male snatch events, and the clean and jerk events.(NAN)
