Lagos, March 23, 2017 (NAN) Some visitors to the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM),the operators of the National Museum, on Thursday advised its management to include galleries for modern arts within the museum.
They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Lagos that this would help them to display ancient and modern arts.
Also, students and pupils coming on excursions there would be able to see the extent of changes arts had gone through over the years.
Mr Opeolu Taiwo, the coordinator of students from the Yaba College of Technology Secondary School, said that students should be able to differentiate between modern and ancient arts by mere looking at them.
“With my experience as an artist, I know students should be taught more of modern arts and the transition from the ancient arts.
“They had been taught modern arts in school but they still needed to see varieties of these in our museums to compliment their learning,’’ he said.
Also, Mrs Janet Don-Owuze, the Proprietress of Janet Group of Schools, Mowe in Ogun, said that art works done years back should be placed side by side the recent ones.
“We need to tell them what was obtainable before and what is done right now in the world of arts; this will make the children to be creative.
“I believe when students place the modern and ancient arts side by side, such works can spur creativity in them,’’ she said.
Mrs Mercy Peters, the coordinator of a scout group, also condemned the absence of galleries of modern arts in the museum.
She said that museums should not only concentrate on history as what is obtainable now would become history tomorrow.
“We need to have contemporary arts represented here because they would soon become part of our history.
“Most of the samples of the modern arts can be placed at strategic locations within the museum alongside the ancient ones to decorate the vicinity,’’ she said.
NAN reports that the National Museum has five galleries that students visit to enrich their knowledge. (NAN)
