Abattoirs
Kano, Nov. 7, 2017 (NAN) Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has bemoaned
the deplorable state of abattoirs and meat markets in the country.
Its President, Dr Godwin Abonyi, said this in Kano on Tuesday during the 54th Annual Conference
of the association.
He said “abattoirs across the country are in terrible condition.”
Abonyi called for state of emergency on abattoir services in the country and immediate measures put in place to rehabilitate them.
He said the meat industry could generate enough revenue to fund its operations, “so, government should recruit relevant veterinary manpower to drive the process nationwide.”
The association president also said that the farmer/herdsmen clash in parts of the country could be attributed to collapse of veterinary services.
The Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Numan Barau, said veterinarians had important roles to
play, not only in the health of animals, but in the health of humans and the environment.
Barau advised stakeholders to focus efforts in saving donkeys from extinction.
He said donkeys were being slaughtered daily without commensurate effort of breeding them.
He added that “if the trend continues, our next generation will only get to know about donkeys
in books as they will become extinct. The same goes to other animals facing similar problem.” (NAN)
