Sokoto, April 2, 2017 (NAN) A member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Tanimu Kyadawa (APC- Gada West), has commended the state government in curbing the recent outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) in the state.

Kyadawa, the Chairman of the House Committee on Commerce and Industry, gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Sokoto.

According to him, the efforts of the state government, through the ministry of health had since yielded positive results.

“The ongoing massive public enlightenment campaign and community sensitisation had resulted in the massive turnout of patients to the hospitals.

” This had consequently led to the free treatment of all the suspected cases of meningitis and other illnesses, like malaria.

“This had in no small measure assisted in bringing the outbreak under control and broke the cycle of disease transmission across the state,” the lawmaker said.

He called on the general public to always prevent the causes of epidemics by ensuring a clean and ventilated environment.

“Our people should always be at alert that the environment we are living in is part of Sahara desert,” Kyadawa said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Health, has disclosed that 90 Local Government Areas in 16 states of the Federation are so far affected by the outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM).

The states include Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Nassarawa, Jigawa, FCT, Gombe, Taraba , Yobe, Kano, Osun, Cross Rivers, Lagos and Plateau.

The total number of people affected across these states is 2,524 with over 328 deaths recorded so far.

The ministry in a statement by its Director of Media and Public Relations, Boade Akinola, noted that the end of the epidemic is in sight (NAN)
