Trucks

Lagos, April 10, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says owners of no fewer than 10 trucks have been brought before mobile courts for quick dispensation of justice in the last one week.
Mr Shehu Zaki, the Zonal Commanding Officer for Ogun and Lagos State Commands, gave the figure while speaking with newsmen along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
He was giving an update on the full enforcement exercise aimed at checking trucks with unlatched containers on the roads as the corps began a special patrol to curb crashes during the Easter festivities.
Zaki said trucks carrying containers not properly latched to their vehicles could attract as much as N250, 000 penalty, going by the Lagos State Traffic Laws.
He noted that the corps had experienced several fatal accidents where container crashes killed people along the expressway.
“This exercise, as you have seen, is designed to target trucks that are carrying containers that are not properly latched on vehicles.
“We thought that after the first operation we had in 2016, the problem would have abated.
“But unfortunately, we have seen the resurgence of this problem arising from containers falling on the road, killing people and causing obstruction.
“If you could remember, on Wednesday April 5 alone, we recorded more than five accidents arising from falling containers,” he said.
Zaki, who is also the Assistant Corps Marshal, Zone 2, said the major concern of the FRSC is to prevent trailers and flat belt containers from unnecessary accidents.
“Enforcement is supposed to be a deterrent, so, if you don’t want to be penalised, stay away from defaulting the traffic rules and regulations,” he said.
The zonal commander said that the enforcement would also focus on quality of tyres of trucks and other articulated vehicles.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, had on April 3 said the corps would resume full enforcement of the law to check containers not properly latched on vehicles. (NAN)
