Commendation

Ilorin, May 8, 2017 (NAN) The management of University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has commended the athletes who represented the institution at the recent Nigeria University Games (NUGA) in Makurdi.
The commendation is contained in the university’s bulletin made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ilorin.
The management praised the athletes for coming sixth out of the 57 universities which participated, after winning five gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals.
NAN reports that the team had competed in athletics, basketball, chess, football, judo, table-tennis, volleyball, scrabble, squash, swimming, taekwondo and tennis at the games.
Team Unilorin garnered three gold medals from badminton and two gold medals from taekwondo.
The football team also won the silver medal, after losing 1-3 in the final to hosts Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
The institution’s badminton team, led by coach Suleiman Tajudeen, also won two silver medals and one bronze medal.
The taekwondo team also won one silver and one bronze medals, while the squash team won a silver medal and a bronze medal.
The scrabble team equally won a silver medal and two bronze medals.
Suliyat Dauda emerged the Best Overall Athlete (Female) among other participants in the scrabble event.
In athletics, Mufutau Oloyede and Ajao Ridwan clinched silver medals in the 10,000m and 800m respectively.
The athletics team equally won two bronze medals in the 400m hurdles and triple jump.
The swimming teams, on their part, picked a silver medal in 100m freestyle relay men and two bronze medals in 100m medley relay men and 100m freestyle relay women.
The chess team also won two silver medals and two bronze medals, while Sekinat Alawaye clinched the only medal (silver) won by the judo team.
The table tennis men’s team, comprising Isa Abdulrahman, Aremu Bidemi, Jimoh Nurudeen and Oladoke Folaranmi, won a silver medal.
According to the bulletin, Team Unilorin was led to the games by the Chairman of Unilorin Sports Council, Prof. Bassey Eke.
The Director of Sports, Prof. Oluwole Obiyemi, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Adetayo Talabi, and the Assistant Director of Sports, Dr Surajudeen Bakinde, were also part of the contingent.
NAN also reports that Team Uniport emerged overall winners of the games with 70 gold, 47 silver and 33 bronze medals.(NAN)
