Unilag chancellor sues for peace and tolerance among Nigerians

Lagos, Jan. 26, 2017 (NAN) The Chancellor, University of Lagos,  Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, has called on graduating students of the institution as well as all well meaning Nigerians to continue to promote peace and tolerance  for the progress of the nation.

El-Kanemi made the call in his address at the third and final day of the 49th convocation ceremony of the institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the final day was for the conferment of higher degrees, comprising of Postgraduate diplomas, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees to a total of 5,717 graduating students.

According to the Royal father, only peace and harmony will guarantee and fast track the  nation’s development  adding that any nation divided can never stand.

“We must all work together and live in peace as one big family in order to attain any of our set goals, irrespective of our economic and political status, religion or creed.

“As graduating students, you must realize that you are the future leaders of this great country and therefore you should seek to deploy yourselves towards causes that would keep the nation together and great.

“You must re-dedicate yourselves to the commitment of the current administration’s desire for change.

“I must congratulate you the graduating students who will be admitted to various higher degrees today as we take delight in your achievements,’’ el-Kanemi who is the Shehu of Borno said.

He expressed gratitude to the Senate of the university for honouring him with the award of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) (Honoris Causa).

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Rahamon Bello said the administration of the institution had been revolutionized through the use of ICT.

 

that of the total graduating students today, 95 would receive Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees while 5,420 others would receive their Masters degrees.

 

According to him, a Research and Innovative Office  was creted to encourage more  research in the institution adding that this has led to more multidisciplinary researches which are attracting bigger national and international grants.

“Researchers are being linked up with research results end-users while patents arising from our researches should be more prevalent,’’ he said.  (NAN)
