Katsina, March 9, 2017 (NAN) The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has donated N48.2 million as Schools Improvement Grant to some primary schools in Katsina State.
Presenting the cheque to the state government on Thursday in Katsina, the UNICEF Chief Filed Officer, Madam Padmavathi Yedla, said the money was for 193 schools.
She said each school would receive N250,000 to improve teaching and learning.
Yedla added that the grant would be handed to the Schools Based Management
Committees (SBMCs) which would identify the schools’ needs for the purpose of improving teaching and learning.
She revealed that UNICEF would also train the SBMCs on developing micro plan for each school to ensure judicious use of the grant.
The officer urged parents to continue to send their children to school, particularly in the rural areas, stressing that “education is a right to every child.
“Parents should send their children to school because it is education that makes one to realise his/her dreams.”
In his remarks, Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina identified inadequate manpower and furniture as some of the major problems facing educational development in the state.
He said “it is a fact that the least number of students population per class in public schools in Katsina State is 86.
“Nevertheless, teachers can impact knowledge on students even under the tree as the case was in olden days, if there is commitment by teachers.”
Masari, therefore, urged the SBMC’s and PTAs to ensure that teachers teach children well in public schools. (NAN)
