UNESCO appoints Ydo Director, Multi-sector Regional Office

Abuja, May 24 (NAN) Mr Yao Ydo from Burkina Faso has been appointed director of the UNESCO Multi-sector Regional Office for West Africa.

According to the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamua, in a statement by Dr Chioma Nwadei, Director/Secretary-General, Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO, the appointment takes effect from April 6.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ydo, born in 1963 holds a doctorate degree in Linguistics and Didactics from Stendhal University, Grenoble III in France.

He also holds a post graduate diploma in Diplomatic and Strategic Studies from the Centre for Diplomatic and Strategic Studies, Paris.

The 54-year old also has a Masters’ degree in English from the University of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.

Ydo began his career in UNESCO in 1997 as an Associate Expert (P-2) with the Section for Basic Education and Literacy and was also a member of the Secretariat of the Education Commission at the General Conference.

After an impressive performance, he was appointed to the post of Programme Specialist (P-3) in education and Programme Coordinator for education, culture and communication at the UNESCO Office in Mali, Bamako in 1999.

In that capacity, Ydo contributed to the implementation of activities carried out by the different programme sectors, which provided him with a broad view of UNESCO’s activities.

In 2004, he was transferred to the UNESCO Office in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where he served as Chief of the Education Section.

In Yaoundé, he was entrusted with the task of providing technical support to the region’s countries in the development and implementation of their education policies and strategies.

In 2006, Ydo was transferred to the UNESCO Office in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he provided assistance in the development of programmes for the reconstruction of the education system and curriculum reform.

In 2013 he was again appointed to the post of Head (P-5) of the UNESCO Office in Abidjan and UNESCO Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, a post he held until his present appointment. (NAN)
