Lagos, April 20, 2017 (NAN) A 32-year-old unemployed man, Samuel James, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a motorcycle on hire purchase.
James, a resident of Boundary Road, Shasha, Lagos, is charged with stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, said that the accused committed the offence on March 12, at Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.
He said that the accused stole a motorcycle valued N80, 000, property of Mr Kenneth Bassey.
Nwosu said that the accused approached the complainant, begging him to give him a job by releasing his motorcycle for him to do business.
“The accused persuaded the complainant to give him his motorcycle so that he could make a living with it.
“The complainant gave him the motorcycle on hire purchase to be paying in installments.
“The next day. the accused called the complainant to inform him that the motorcycle had been taken away from him by unknown men.
“All efforts made by the complainant to recover his motorcycle proved unsuccessful,” he said.
The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which prescribes three years jail term for stealing.
The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offence and was granted N25, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mrs I.O Raji, said that one of the sureties must be a blood relation and the other a religious leader in Lagos State.
She adjourned the case until April 27 for mention. (NAN)
