UN volunteer group supports community-based development in 5 North-East villages

Yola, Aug. 6, 2018 (NAN) The United Nations Volunteer on Humanitarian Crisis says it has supported five communities in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe on environmental protection and borehole repairs.

Mr Isaiah Akum, UN Country Volunteer Coordinator, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Sangere village, Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa on Monday.

Akum, who spoke on the sidelines of community trees planting and sanitation programme in the area, also said the group used community volunteers to plant over 700 economic trees.

 

According to him, the group also repairs 50 boreholes and rehabilitated latrines, drainage in Ngwom, Bara, Bumsa, Sangere and Uba communities in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

The volunteer coordinator said that the programme was funded by UN in collaboration with UNDP and the participating communities from the beneficiary states.

He said that the core objective of the project was to inculcate volunteerism and civic engagement to the communities, for peace and development as well as encourage trust between diverse people.

According to the coordinator, the project is also to create awareness for the locals to fully participate and play pivotal role in achieving the 2030 agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Among the core objectives of the exercise is to mobilise community-based volunteers to involve in humanitarian, peace-building and post conflict recovery as well as sustainable development and poverty eradication,” Akum said. (NAN)
