Lagos, Aug. 21, 2017 (NAN) Baseline Foundation, organisers of the ongoing Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi baseball and softball championships in Lagos, says the inclusion of U-13 category in competition will improve the sport at the grassroots.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that seven little league clubs from five states are participating in the second edition of the championship, tagged “OKAS’’ holding at Effortwill Academy in Ejigbo.
Adeola Omotosho, a board member of the foundation, told NAN that the U-13 category was included in order to avail the players the opportunity to grow in the sport.
Omotosho said that the timing of the championship which will end on Aug. 25, was perfect for the little league players who were on vacation.
“This competition started off as U-17 event, but we decided to include the young players so that they can be part of the championship.
“We know the importance of developing sport at grassroots and development should cut across all levels as far as baseball and softball is concerned.
“I hope through this championship, Baseline Foundation will be able to identify and raise future stars in the sport,’’ he said.
He added that the foundation would continually work with the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association to move the sport forward.
NAN reports that Delta State won the last edition of the championships held in 2016 to mark the one year coronation of the Ikorodu monarch.
