Hamburg, March 6, 2017 (dpa/NAN) Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu’s planned appearance at a Hamburg rally on Tuesday to drum up support for a constitutional referendum has been cancelled due to fire safety concerns, a German official said.
Other Turkish rallies for the referendum on constitutional reform have also been called off in Germany, straining ties between Berlin and Ankara.
Austria and the Netherlands on Monday backed Germany in the diplomatic spat, saying “our governments would follow suit in preventing campaign appearances by Turkish politicians’’.
Some 1.4 million Turkish people in Germany are eligible to vote in the referendum set for April 16.
