Lagos, Feb. 7, 2017 (NAN) A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old man, James Isma-Asma, to three years imprisonment for drugs trafficking.
Isma-Asma, a truck loader, who has no legal representation, was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Isma-Asma pleaded guilty to the charge and urged the court to show mercy and be lenient with him, promising to turn over a new leaf.
The trial judge, Justice Chuka Obiozor, found the accused guilty of the offence and sentenced him to three years imprisonment without an option of fine.
Obiozor said that the sentence would run from the date of his arrest, and ordered that the narcotics should be destroyed by NDLEA if there was no appeal against the judgment.
The Prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, while reviewing facts of the case, tendered statement of the convict, a request for scientific aid form and a drug analysis form as exhibits before the court.
Aernan said that the convict committed the offence on Nov. 24, 2016 at Hajj Camp around NAHCO in Ikeja.
He said that 1.1kg of Cannabis Sativa, otherwise known as hemp, was found in his possession and was subsequently arrested.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence contravened Sections 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004. (NAN)
