Abuja, May 22, 2018 (NAN) A tourism expert, Dr Shehu Gidado, on Tuesday, said that capacity building for service providers in the tourism and transport sectors was key, to enhance development and efficient service delivery.
Gidado made this assertion in his presentation entitled: “Building Capacity for Global Best Practices in the Tourism and Transport Sector” at the National Tourism and Transport Summit and Expo in Abuja.
The theme of the summit is: “Tourism and Transport: Key Sectors for Economic Diversification, Sustainable Growth and Development”.
“It is absolutely necessary to build relevant capacity in tourism and transport, to adapt to the new changes in the sector, to boost business and achieve best global practices.
“There is the need to compare clients’ demand and skills of the personnel on ground in the sectors, so as to identify the existing gap and fill it.
“The internal personnel and other tools can be used to achieve best global practices: when tourist sites and infrastructure are improved, they will attract more clients and enable you to build more capacity,” he said.
Gidado said that another strategy to enhance service delivery was the provision of convenient accommodation at competitive standard, stressing the need to also build standard.
“It is a global phenomenon to ensure regular assessment of post-training and performance of trained personnel.
“This is to professionalise the workplace to be able to do the needful; because you build capacity of the personnel to improve efficiency that will lead to best global practices.
“We should embrace capacity building: that is the only best way for the growth and development of both the tourism and transport sectors,” Gidado said.
NAN reports that the national summit seeks to x-ray the tourism and transportation industries of the country as a means of boosting national economy for sustainable growth and development.
It is also to provide the platform for regulatory and enforcement agencies, national, states and local governments, to reappraise and have a better understanding of the importance of the sectors. (NAN)
