Teenage boy pleads guilty to N1, 400 jerrycan theft

Lagos, May 23, 2017 (NAN) A 17-year-old boy, Chinedu Eze, who pleaded guilty to stealing empty jerry cans valued at N1, 400, was on Tuesday remanded in prison on the orders of an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Chief Magistrate A.T. Elias ordered that the accused should be kept behind bars pending facts and sentence.

The accused was arraigned for a two-count charge of causing grievous harm and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin said the accused committed the offences on May 19 at about 5.00 a.m. at Iddo Market in Oyingbo.

He said the accused stabbed Mohammed Hassan, a security guard on patrol, with a knife before stealing the jerry cans from where they were kept in the market.

He told the court that the accused caused the guard grievous harm.

The offences contravened Sections 245 and 285 of the Criminal law of Lagos State, 2015.(revised)

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 245 provides seven years in jail for grievous harm, while Section 285 stipulates three years for stealing.

The case has been adjourned until May 30. (NAN)
