Teachers

Minna, Dec. 14, 2016 (NAN) Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria (HETAN), Niger Chapter, has urged principals of schools to respect the ethics of the teaching profession.
Mrs Asebe Galadima, the Chairperson of the association, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Wednesday.
Galadima said principals should stop deploying home economics teachers to teach other subjects.
According to her, this is wrong and unethical as their expertise on the subject is lost and the subject assigned to them is also shoddily taught.
Galadima advised principals who have excess home economics teachers to transfer them to other schools where they were needed.
She noted that principals of schools that don’t have home economics teachers usually deployed any teacher in the school to take the subject.
“This is wrong and an abuse of professionalism.
“Home economics is not about cooking and baking or doing other house work; it is beyond what the lay man perceives of the subject.”
She advised the Niger government to take census of subject teachers in respective public schools in the state and strike a balance.
“This will help in curbing explosion of teachers in some subjects and while others are lacking teachers,” she said. (NAN)
