Enugu, Aug. 22, 2017 (NAN) Taxi operators in Enugu metropolis on Tuesday applauded the state government’s safer roads initiatives, saying that it had enthroned sanity and security for commuters in the place.

The Chairman of the association, Mr Ken Ugwu, made this known in Enugu during a safety workshop organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport.

Ugwu said that members of the association were appreciative of the various reforms so far implemented in the sector which, he said, had encouraged the employment of no fewer than 200 road traffic enforcers.

He said that the decongestion of the various traffic flashpoints in the state capital which had defied solution over the years, was another significant milestone.

According to him, taxi operators are the greatest beneficiaries of the benevolence of the state administration, and the association will fully support future aspirations of the governor.

“The governor has shown himself to be a good manager of human and material resources. He cares for the needy and is a great supporter of the poor.

“We, hereby, appeal to the governor to consider presenting himself for re-election in 2019 as our members and entire families shall support such aspiration.”

Ugwu said that the governor had promised to procure 300 commercial vehicles for members of the association and appealed to him to fulfil the promise.

Earlier, Mr Peter Ajah, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, had said that the aim of the workshop was to equip the taxi operators with modern traffic trends in line with international best practices.

Ajah said that the state government was passionate about the safety of commuters and had previously engaged other stakeholders in the sector.

He said that it was gratifying that the cab operators had expressed support for the governor, adding that their gesture was an acknowledgment that Ugwuanyi reckoned with all strata of the society.

“They have noted how good the governor has made our roads and have requested him to continue with the good works.

“It is also necessary to point out that this administration frowns at any form of extortion by traffic enforcers. We must make life easy for cab operators and others.”

Ajah said that government viewed the security of commuters as paramount and would continue to provide the enabling environment for them to operate. (NAN)
