    Chinese expert urges Africa to leverage exhibitions to reshape continent’s narrative

    Abuja, June 13, 2024 (NAN) Mr Li Xuda, Director of Chinese cultural centre in Nigeria on Thursday called on Africa to use photo exhibitions to project the continent’s image positively to attract tourists and potential investors.

    Li made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on the sidelines of a photo exhibition titled,  “A Renewed Glimpse into Africa: Exhibition of Chinese Artist Works Inspired by their Trip to Africa”.

    According to Li, photography engages storytelling through interactive displays that captivate visitors and inspire them to explore the beauty and richness of a country.

    He added that evolving the stories told in and about African culture by distributing accurate and empowering stories is key to reshaping Africa’s narrative and attracting tourists to the region.

    “We believe that exhibitions are valuable in showcasing the diverse cultures, landscapes, and people of Africa in a positive light.

    “Through these photos, we can see the beauty, resilience, and vibrancy of African communities shedding light on their unique traditions, customs, and way of life.

    “Africa is a land of culture with splendid civilisation and abundant natural resources.

    “We also believe that this exhibition will strengthen ties between China and Africa and pave the way for increased tourism and economic opportunities,” he said.

    NAN reports that the photographs were taken by Duan Tiejun, Chairman of Tianjin Culture, Tourism, and Photographers’ Association, among others who visited Senegal, Tanzania, Nigeria, Mauritius, and many other African countries.

    NAN also reports that about 70 students from various schools were in attendance for the photo exhibition. (NAN) (www.nan.ng)

    Abuja, June 8, 2024 (NAN) Mr Li Xuda, Director of China Cultural Centre in Nigeria has emphasised the importance of learning Chinese language to enhance job prospects and business opportunities within Nigeria and globally.

    Li said this on Saturday at the sideline of the “Chinese Bridge” language proficiency competition for foreign college students, hosted by the Chinese Embassy, in Abuja.

    According to Li, there is an increasing demand for individuals proficient in Chinese language and culture across various sectors, ranging from business and finance to government and academia.

    He also added that the growing economic ties between China and Nigeria have increased demand for individuals with proficiency in the Chinese language.

    ”China is Nigeria’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching over 20 billion dollars in recent years.

    “Learning Chinese will not only open up job opportunities in Chinese-owned companies operating in Nigeria, but also provide a competitive edge in the global job market,”Li said.

    He encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the various Chinese language programmes and resources available in the country, including Confucius Institutes and language schools.

    On his part, Zhao Hongling, the Dean of the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos, emphasised that the competition served as a bridge connecting China to the world.

    Zhao added that with the increasing presence of Chinese companies in Nigeria, being able to communicate in Mandarin could significantly boost one’s career prospect.

    Also, Yu Zhangbao, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka expressed his appreciation to the organisers for the competition, which had greatly inspired more young people to learn Chinese and understand its culture.

    NAN reports that the “Chinese Bridge” competition, which commenced 23 years ago, has fostered interactions among Chinese language learners worldwide, aiming to deepen understanding of China and its diverse culture.

    NAN also reports that the winner of the First prize will be sponsored to China, to partake in the global competition and will also have the opportunity to select from the top 10 Universities in China for further studies. (NAN)(www.nannews.com.ng)

  • Nigeria, China reaffirm commitment to promote cultural diplomacy

    Abuja, June 5, 2024 (NAN) Hon. James Sule Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering lasting mutual ties through cultural diplomacy.

    Sule said this on Wednesday in Abuja during the “Energy China – Nigeria Dance Competition Final ” hosted by the China Cultural Centre and China General Chambers of Commerce in Nigeria in collaboration with China Energy International Group Nigeria Co., Ltd.

    According to him, Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and diverse traditions are essential elements that can be showcased globally through cultural diplomacy.

    “By collaborating with China, a country with a long history and rich cultural legacy through cultural diplomacy, Nigeria aims to enhance its cultural influence and facilitate cross-cultural dialogue that transcends political and economic boundaries.

    “We believe that by promoting cultural diplomacy, we can build connections that span continents, promoting understanding beyond politics and economics,” Sule said.

    According to him, Nigeria aspires to be a beacon of artistic innovation, a hub where diverse voices converge, and a place where cultural exchange thrives.

    Sule assured that with the unwavering support of the Ministry of Art, Nigeria was committed to fostering enhanced cooperation and collaboration with China to strengthening their partnership through cultural diplomacy.

    Also speaking, Mr Li Xuda, Director of China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, said,” China views cultural diplomacy as a key component that can not only go beyond political, religious and cultural boundaries, but also play an important role in multinational cultural exchanges.”

    According to him, Nigeria is a land of rich and colorful cultural heritage which gives opportunity for cultural exchanges to thrive.

    “Nigeria, long celebrated for its festivals, music, sculptures, literature, film, and dance, is seen by China as an essential partner in advancing its cultural diplomacy objectives in Africa.

    “By nurturing cultural exchanges and forging cultural connections, China envisions a more profound bilateral relationship with Nigeria in the future,”Li said.

    Mr Li Baisheng, Managing Director from China Energy, expressed appreciation to the Embassy, the China Cultural Centre judges and participants for their strong support towards China-Nigerian cultural exchanges.

    He noted that since entering the Nigerian market in 1999, Energy China had actively participated in the development of Nigeria’s power and infrastructure field.

    “Energy China is also committed to promoting economic, trade and cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries to reach the goal of sharing Chinese harmony, and performing Nigeria-China,”he said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the Bwari Dance Group, Nigeria and Wang Ao from China, both emerged tops,with each group cashing home the star prize of N500,000.

    While first and second runners up received cash prizes of N200,000, and N100,000 respectively. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
