Lagos, July 24, 2017 (NAN) Thursdaline Peter, the organiser of Kiddies Summer Defence Workshop, says the programme is aimed at training children in self defensive techniques.
Peter, also a taekwondo instructor, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.
She said that the workshop, which kicked off on Monday with 10 children at the National Stadium, Lagos, would end on July 29.
Peter said that the programme was necessary due to high rate of child abuse, rape and intimidation, being faced by underage children in the society.
“Combat sports are multi-purpose; apart from the sports’ value, it equips people on defensive measure, which children need as a guide.
“Parents and guardians will not always be there for their children to protect them; so, they need to know what to do in time of danger and attack,” she said.
Peter urged parents to register their wards and get them meaningfully engaged with the training.
According to her, the workshop, which started in 2015, is usually programmed this early, to enable pupils to participate and have enough time for their summer lessons.
Peter said that intending participants were expected to come with their sport wears as part of the requirements.
She said that seasoned martial art instructors were on ground to conduct the programmes.
The instructor said that certificates and gift items would be given to the participants at the end of the workshop. (NAN)
