Ikeja, June 20, 2018 (NAN) Two suspected traffic thieves — Tobi Ajao and Adewale Sodiq — who allegedly broke the window of a jeep and snatched a bag containing some jewellery, an iPhone and a laptop, were on Wednesday arraigned in Lagos.

The duo was, however, released on N100,000 bail each after they pleaded not guilty.

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, ordered the accused to provide two responsible sureties each as part of the bail condition.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

The accused, Ajao, 22, and Sodiq, 22, who both reside at Oshodi area of Lagos, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, willful damage and stealing.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi, had alleged that the accused committed the offences on May 10 at Anthony area on the Lagos-Ikorodu Expressway.

He said the duo willfully damaged the door glass of a Range Rover jeep with registration no. LND 538 CF belonging to the complainant, Folashade Badejo, and snatched the bag containing the laptop, iPhone and jewellery while in the traffic.

“They came suddenly from the rear and damaged the door glass of the car and snatched a bag containing the jewellery, an iPhone and a laptop all valued at N800, 000,” he told the court.

Emuerhi said the accused were later apprehended by the police from Anthony Division.

The offences contravened Sections 287, 351 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

The case has been adjourned until July 26 for trial. (NAN)
