Lagos, Oct. 5, 2017 (NAN) A 25-year-old furniture maker, Michael Akudinobi, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over alleged possession of cannabis.
Akudinobi, a resident of Baruwa, Lagos, was also charged with phone theft.
According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, the accused committed the offences on Sept.30 at Pako Market, Alimosho, Lagos.
“The accused engages in the business of selling and smoking the weeds,” he said.
Egunjobi said that the accused snatched a phone worth N85,000 from Mr Philip Oparaocha.
“The complainant was waiting for a friend when the accused approached him, requesting for money to buy hot drinks.
“The complainant refused and the accused descended on him and, in the process, the complainant’s phone dropped from his pocket.
“The accused quickly picked it and took to his heels.
“The accused was arrested where he was selling and smoking hemp,’’ he said.
The prosecutor noted that the offences contravene Sections 166 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes three years’ jail term for stealing.
The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences, and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr I.O. Raji, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until Oct. 10 for mention. (NAN)
