Lagos, April 6, 2017 (NAN) Mr Jide Oke, a former Chairman of Lagos Chapter of thme Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), has advised professionals to help check quackery in the construction industry.
Oke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that the call was imperative because of the numerous consultancy services in the sector.
According to him, non-professionals haven taken advantage of the pervasive ignorance of the populace about the profession to corner jobs meant for consultants.
He said that some elite could not distinguish a land surveyor from a quantity surveyor or an estate surveyor.
“Even roles meant for town planners are being given to architects in most cases.
“Therefore, professionals must in one accord rise up against quackery to save the profession,” he said.
Oke also called for the retraining of professionals to enhance the competence of professionals in the industry.
He said that different professional bodies in the construction industry were now rendering consultancy services.
Oke, who is also the Managing Partner, Jims Partnership in Lagos, said there was the need for consultancy firms to scale up “their game” to meet the demands of clients.
“Our competencies need to be enhanced at all times so that advice and opinions from us can continue to be respected by clients.
“Today’s client is very knowledgeable much more than before, we can only be respected as much as our trust-worthiness can go,” he said. (NAN) LUC/JI/TA Editing by Joseph Idika/Tajudeen Atitebi
