Ibadan, May 26, 2017 (NAN) Dr Adeshola Adepoju, the Executive Director, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Ibadan, has called on corporate organisations and private sector practitioners to support the Federal Government’s green world initiative.

Adepoju made the call on Friday in Ibadan in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that international organisations and relevant stakeholders should support the initiative by assisting the government to fund institutions such as FRIN to expand the country’s forest cover.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to cultivate the habit of planting trees, sadding that human beings need trees to survive.

“What we need to survive as human beings is what trees give out; we should not destroy them.

“Destroying trees means destroying our source of oxygen that trees give free of charge,’’ he said.

Adepoju promised that the institute would not relent in its efforts to educate, sensitise and convince Nigerians that planting trees is more profitable than most businesses they pursue.

He said that the institute plans to mark World Environment Day on June 5 with the theme ‘connecting people to nature’.

“On that day we will embark on sensitisation campaign, host young farmers, students among others, to enable them have an idea of what forestry is all about.

“They will visit our museum and nursery to see the process of developing artificial forests and how to regenerate degraded forest area,” he said. (NAN)
