Suleja, March 9, 2017 (NAN) The Suleja Local Government Area of Niger says that arrangements have been concluded to relocate Madalla market to its permanent site behind Zuma Rock.
Alhaji Shuaibu Maje, Chairman of the council, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Suleja.
He said that the move would reduce the frequent gridlocks and fatal accidents on Thursdays that is the Madalla market day.
He explained that the relocation would also ensure smooth movement of motorists especially those coming from Abuja to Kaduna.
Maje explained that the council would provide water, access road, fence as well as security at the new site.
The former Chairman of the council, Alhaji Diko Kassim, had told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in April 2016, that the new location would be more convenient for both traders and customers.
“The size of the new location is enough to accommodate the market and in addition, we are proposing the construction of a motor park beside it. Therefore, we intend to have a motor park in front and market at the back.
”The new location is behind the residential housing estate by Madalla U-turn before Zuma rock,” Kassim had said.
The present location of Madalla market had been a scene of fatal accidents on the busy Kaduna-Abuja highway.
In 1998, an oil tanker skidded off the road at the market and burnt more than 50 people to death.
In 2006, an articulated truck lost control on a Thursday and killed 10 people with scores wounded.
In 2007, another fuel tanker fell and burnt a large part of the market and left several people dead. (NAN)
