Minna, April 19, 2018 (NAN) Students of Niger State College of Education Minna, have appealed to the management of the college to beef up security around the boys hostel against trespassers and avert attack from the illegal gold miners.
The President of the student union of the college, Adamu Shuibu, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Thursday.
He said that the continued activities of the illegal miners at college posed security threat to the students and the school.
Shuibu decried that the nefarious activities of the illegal gold miners had deterred the students in boys’ hostel from going to study in the school at night, adding that development could temper with their peace, if not checked.
“The boys’ hostel is in serious risk because it is close to their illegal mining site; they have severally harassed our students by injuring them with dangerous weapons.
“These so called gold miners have severally robbed and abused our students, times without number,’’ he said.
Shuibu noted that because of the excavation in the search for gold, the ecosystem of the place had been tempered with, adding that rain water usually block the road in the college due to excavated sand.
‘’When the rains set in, students will no longer pass through the rear gate to the school because of erosion caused by excavated sand.
“Rains usually wash out the dugout sand to the road and that usually cause water to log on the path to school.
“This has caused fracture and sprain for some of our students, in the bid to jump over the logged water some fell and had fracture” he said.
Shuibu noted that it was a bad image for the school to have such activity going on in the college premises.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on April 15, by 12 p.m, six people lost their lives while excavating gold at the premises of the college. (NAN)
