Lagos, April 17, 2018 (NAN) Mr John Ekoko, former Chairman, Nigerian Environmental Society, Lagos Island Chapter (NESLIC), on Tuesday urged residents of Lagos state to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

Ekoko gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, raining season is around the corner, noting that the way refuse is being disposed; the whole place will be messy once the rain starts.

”The people of Lagos are supposed to have imbibed the culture of bagging their refuse and dropping them at designated places.

”However, this has not been the case, it is a pity as refuse has returned everywhere on Lagos streets, unfortunately, the refuse gets into water body,” he said.

Ekoko also advised people to form the habit of putting their refuse in polythene bags and ensure they drop them neatly where the refuse trucks would pick them.

He said that this way, many diseases caused by dirty environment would be avoided.

According to Ekoko, once the refuse gets to the water bodies, it contaminates it,expressing that all the people using untreated borehole water will be at risk of water borne diseases.

He said that it was always better to prevent diseases than allowing them to happen to avoid hospital and the attendant medical bill. (NAN)
