Abuja, Aug. 23, 2017 (NAN) Stakeholders in the environment sector have called for adequate involvement of youths and women in the implementation of projects and programmes to ensure sustainable environment.
The stakeholders made the call in Abuja on Wednesday in a communiqué issued after a one-day workshop on 10th National Steering Committee Meeting of Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
The communiqué was signed by Mr Kayode Bello, the Department of GEF Office in the Federal Ministry of Environment, Abuja.
The stakeholders recommended that sufficient participation of the youths, women and vulnerable people would provide effective implementation of GEF projects and programmes in the country.
They said that the involvement of the youths, women and vulnerable people would increase effective awareness and help to educate communities on the aim and benefits of the projects.
They said that decentralisation of energy delivery in the country by the Federal Government was necessary for national development.
They called on government to ensure that decentralised renewable energy was promoted in various communities across the country.
They emphasised on the need for development of practical projects and programmes that would incorporate for effective awareness on Public Organic Pollutants (POPs) and other environmental issues.
They said that the GEF Steering Committee should set up a three man committee to draw up ideas that would ensure effective implementation of projects and programmes in the country.
The stakeholders however called on the government to be committed in ensuring that its obligations to the GEF and counterparts funding to the projects were achieved.
They said that the objectives of the workshop were to evaluate the progress made by the projects implementing agencies, development partners and all the stakeholders.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that GEF partners with international institutions, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the private sectors to address global environmental issues while supporting national sustainable development initiatives.
The GEF was also the largest public funder of projects to developing countries to improve the global environment. (NAN)
