Yola, Jan.16, 2017 (NAN) The striking Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) of Adamawa State University (ADSU) has raised concern over poor funding of the university.
Addressing journalists on Monday in Yola, the branch Chairman of SSANU, Mr James Fwah, noted that the institution had been under-funded over the years, adding that things were grinding to a halt.
“The union studied with dismay the the severe under-funding in the previous years and more disturbing in the recent; this has left the university with piles of unsettled staff claims and managerial expenses.
“Apart from the dwindling salary payments, the university cannot sustain its overhead expenses.
“Presently, the university is almost at a standstill unless urgent measures are taken. We, therefore, demand that funding profile of the university as enshrined in the university law be implemented.”
He also decried what he described as the foot-dragging attitude of management toward staff promotion and confirmation which, it said, had affected members’ welfare.
He called for the payment the earned allowances, adding that the university was the only one yet to implement it in the North-East.
Furthermore, he said that the present pension scheme was contrary to the one approved by the law setting up the university and called for the stoppage of the pension deduction until all grey areas were resolved.
“The union is peeved that deductions from staff salaries not remitted to union coffers for several years.
“This lack of remittance is unacceptable as it has continued to take its toll on our members welfare.
“We, therefore, demand the immediate settlement of all unremitted union dues.
“The union has written to severally to the concerned authorities on the above issues but to no avail,”
the chairman said.
He appealed to stakeholders to intervene to save the university from “imminent collapse”. (NAN)
