Abuja, Jan. 17, 2018 (NAN) Sri Lanka High Commission on Wednesday donated relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the Durumi Camp, Area 1, Abuja.

The Team, which was led by Mr Thambirajah Raveenthiran, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, said it was part of the commission’s activities to mark its anniversary.

He said that as the commission celebrates its 70 years anniversary, they remembered the plight of those affected by the insurgency, which had displaced many Nigerians in the Northeast.

He appealed to other embassies to emulate this kind gesture by reaching out to the IDPs in Nigeria.

“This is a special ceremony to mark our 70th anniversary, which is coming up on the February 4, 2018.

“It is a long period in the history of our country.

“So we decided to bring some food items to the people, who were displaced due to the insurgency that left over 7,000 people dead and 2,800 people displaced.

“Because of the suffering and the pains of those displaced, we decided to contribute some food stuffs for these people and also to set an example for other embassies to follow,” he said.

Responding, Mrs Layatu Ayuba, the Women Leader at the Camp, appreciated the commission for remembering them, stating that the foodstuff would go a long way to support everyone in camp.

She said most time they only eat once in the camp, adding that with the relief materials that is coming in this year, it will enable their kids to feed more than once a day.

The News Agency on Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items donated included 14 bags of 50kg rice and 27 cartons of indomine noddles.(NAN)
