Concern
By Bosede Olufunmi
Kano, Dec. 14, 2016 (NAN) Some parents in Kano on Wednesday expressed concern over the negative influence of social media on their children.
The parents, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Kano, said they were alarmed at their children’s high rate of exposure to social vices through available materials in the form of information they could access by using their cell phones.
“The rate at which some parents allow their children to operate cell phones now is alarming considering its effects on the children,’’ a parent, Malam Abdu Mohammed said.
Another parent, Mrs Yemisi Adebayo stressed the need for parents to be mindful of the kind of websites their children visit.
“You will see a child of between 10 and 15 years using cell phone which he or she doesn’t need at all considering his/her age.
“If the phone is meant to ease communication why not buy a landline or an ordinary one which does not have such facilities that promote immorality,’’ she said.
Adebayo said even though some social media platforms sometimes helped children socialise, their exposure to such platforms should be checked.
According to her, parents should avoid giving children mobile phones with sophisticated facilities that could disrupt their studies.
“There is need for parents to monitor their children closely in order to have access to their phones and the kind of website they use.’’
Another parent, Mrs Umma Sani, stressed the need for guardians and parents to protect children from websites that could endanger the lifestyles of the children.
“We need to help them, keep an eye on them so as to be proud of them when they grow up,’’ she said. (NAN)
